Apologies:
Current form IV members (Emma Holman, Sana Khan, Isobel Korucu, Alicia Lee, Erin
Moore, Anthony Rebote, Naeema Wadood, and Martyna Zajac) are out on work experience.
Potential new members from form III were attending choir practice.
Potential new members from forms II and IV were at an event in UL, but may attend next
week.

Matters arising from previous meeting:
Spoke about tasks to be made actionable including painting wardens, taking minutes, new
members and a litter review.
Discussion:
 There will be jobs for new members whenever they are available i.e. during free
classes, or as part of short courses etc.
 Litter review of the school to be carried out, identifying litter black spots around the
school.
 Plan for a litter review from tomorrow, after break and lunch time if timing suits new
members.
 Mr. Delohery will provide students with a map of the school. Students will monitor
and record instances of littering.
 Students will also monitor use of general waste bins, and check “recycling bins” (of
which there may be none) to ensure that general waste has not been mixed with
recycling.
 Mr. Delohery is preparing class passes to allow students to work on Green School
matters during class time (with class teacher’s permission).
 After break tomorrow (Wednesday) suits many of the third year members, as they
have their short course option subjects at that time. After lunch may not suit. Teacher
members may have to carry out the after lunch review instead.
 Mr. Moloney has talked to a recycling company about introducing a number of
recycling bins to the school.
 The current number of recycling bins in the school is 0.

 The Green Schools Committee will need to ascertain how many recycling bins are
needed.
 Student members were asked to consider this when carrying out their litter survey and
add it into the “additional notes” section of the school map they will be given.
 There was also a discussion on food waste and the possibility of introducing a
composting system.
 Embracing our school’s unique diversity, it was decided that the CC Green Schools
Committee would take a multi-cultural approach to the Green Schools initiative –
looking at, and learning from, the approach of other cultures to topics like recycling
i.e. what can we learn from other countries? e.g. Holland.
 There will be a Green Schools poster competition after Christmas that students are
being encouraged to enter.
 There is also scope for including parents and the wider school community and it is
hoped to make a showcase of their work by the end of the year. Ms. Morrissey is
involved with this.
 Ms. McCarthy is encouraging students to look at Green Schools from a European and
global perspective.
 It is also hoped that other teachers will consider incorporating Green Schools into
their lessons especially in subjects like CSPE and the short course options.
 Students should be reminded that being part of the Green Schools Committee is good
for the school and wider community, as well as for their CVs and/or JC profile of
work.
 Students are invited to come to the art room when they are free (and with the class
teachers permission) to work on Green Schools matters.

Conclusion:
The aim of the Green Schools Committee is to introduce and foster a new culture of recycling
and being more mindful of waste management. This will not happen easily and may require
some time to implement. The possibility of holding assemblies to introduce new school
policies, and the introduction of different bins (i.e. closed topped recycling bins to reduce
contamination of recyclables) was also discussed and will be explore further at the next
meeting.
From next week the role of minute taking will be assigned to a student, to give them a
responsibility
